Many people die each year because of their addiction to drugs, tobacco and alcohol?

Cocaine, heroin, amphetamines, etc., take many lives each year.

In recent years the use of cocaine has increased a lot in our country. Cocaine can lead to death, as it frequently produces strokes and myocardial infarction. To this must be added deaths due to overdoses and adulterations.

Unfortunately many people who use drugs do not quite believe the dangers of drugs.
In Spain there have been numerous anti-drug programs, but unfortunately the drug is easy to acquire in our country and in many others.

Heroin and Hypodermic Needle

the invention of the hypodermic needle played an important role in the story of addiction to drugs ?

In 1853 an Scottish physician, Alexander Woods, invented the hypodermic needle. At the time of hypodermic’s discovery doctor thought that the use of hypodermic needle would prevent addiction to  drug. The explanation for that if the drug did not reach the stomach, the person would not develop a “hunger” for them.

The first narcotic drug administrated by hypodermic needle was Morphine. The second one was Heroin, which was isolated from opium in 1898.

Amphetamines in Europe

Did you know that…..

trends are changing in the trafficking of synthetic drugs in Europe ?

According to Europol and EMCDDA (European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug), the Europeans have become the number one of the world in the production and consumption of amphetamines. The report of these agencies said that 12.5 millions of people in Europe used amphetamines in the last year.

Amphetamines are the second most used drug in Europe after cocaine. Other consumed drugs are heroin, cocaine and cannabis.

The report states also that the consumption is rising in many countries in the North and East of Europe: Poland, Lithuania, Bulgaria, etc.

Origin of Heroin

Did you know that…..
Heroin was isolated from opium in 1898 ?

Heroin was first isolated from opium as a non-addictive substitute for Morphine. At first it was thought that Heroin could solve the problem of addiction to Morphine.

About fifteen years later scientists discovered the great addictive power of Heroin.

More recently, something similar happened with the Methadone. In this case also it was believed that it was a drug without the problem of causing addiction. Unfortunately, Methadone is also an addictive drug.

Until about fifteen years later scientics did not recognize the great addictive power of Heroin.

More recently, something similar happens with the Methadone, ie in this case was believed that it
was a drug without the problem of addiction. Unfortunately, methadone is also addictive.

Heroin Withdrawal Syndrome

Did you know that…..

the Heroin Withdrawal Syndrome is characterized by perspiration, rhinorrhea, lacrimation, yawning, mydriasis, tremors, piloerection, muscle twitching, anorexia, and hot or cold flashes ?

Those symptoms usually appear between 7 to 12 hours after the consumption of the last dose, and last more than a week. The intensity of the Withdrawal Syndrome could be different for each person.

Naloxone given IV is the drug of choice in opioid acute intoxication, because it possesses no respiratory depressant properties, and the recovery may occurs immediately following the administration.

Did you know that…..

Opioids (Heroin, Morphine, etc.) intoxication is characterized by euphoria, itching of the skin, decreased respiratory rate, bradycardia, flushing, meiosis, hypo-tension and decreased body temperature ?

Morphine is an alkaloid of the opium. Morphine was isolated in 1804 by a German pharmacist called Friedrich Sertürner.

The name of Morphine was in the honor of Morpheus, the God of dreams in the ancient Greek mythology.
