Who is Dorothea Linde Dix   ?

Dorothea Linde Dix (1802-1887) was a school teacher that became shocked when she saw the “places” where mental patients were locked up and the treat them received.

Dorothea Linde Dix wrote a report (famous in the Psychiatry History) about mental hospital and sent it to Massachusetts authorities in 1843.

Through her activities, twenty states built modern mental hospital, and extended the facilities of a total of thirty-two hospitals in USA, Canada and British Isles. Among these was the famous “Government Hospital for the Insane” at Washington D.C.

the first hospital for the care of mental disorders in USA was The Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia ?

The First Mental Hospital in USA was established in 1773 .

In 1560, two centuries ago Friar Bernardo Alvarez founded in Mexico D.F. the first hospital in America to care for the mentally ill. The hospital was called San Hipolito Hospital.
