the term Sadism and Masochism were first introduced into Psychiatric literature by Richard von Krafft-Ebing in 1882 ?
Sadism from a french novelist of his time, the Marquis de Sade, to describe the perversion about which the famous novelist wrote, the association of sex and cruelty.
Krafft-Ebing named as masochism the perversion described by the writer Sacher Masoch, whose romances and novels were centered also around the association of sex and pain.
The Sadism is the experience of sexually pleasurable sensations produced by acts of cruelty, bodily punishment, afflicted by one ‘s own person or when witnessed in others.
It may also consist of an innate desire to humiliate, hurt wound, or even destroy others in order thereby to create sexual pleasure in one self.
Masochism is the wish to suffer pain, being wound, flagellated and be subjected to force.
Ebing wrote the following: “In the intercourse of the sexes the active or aggressive role belongs to the man; woman remains passive-defensive. It affords a man great pleasure to win a woman, to conquer her; and in the ars amandi the modesty of a woman who keeps herself on the defensive until the moment of surrender is an element of great psychological significance and importance.
Under normal conditions a man meets obstacles which it is his part to overcome and for which nature has given him an aggressive character. This aggressive character, however under pathological conditions may likewise be excessively developed, and express itself in an impulse to subdue absolutely the object of desire, even to destroy or kill it“.
