Did you know that…..

according to a recent survey EU citizens recognise that alcohol can have detriment effects on health : 97% believe that alcohol can contribute to liver diseases but 67% are aware about the risk of cancer ?

This survey (EU citizens’ attitudes towards alcohol) has been carried out in the European Union and published in April 2010 in the Euro-barometer 331. It covers the population 15 years and over of the respective nationalities of the European Union Members. (*)

Did you know that…..

according to a recent survey men are far more likely (84%) to consume alcoholic beverages than women (68%), and those men who drink tend to do so more frequently than women and have more drinks per sitting ?

And did you know that…..

one quarter (25%) of young people aged 15-24 years drink 5 or more drinks once a week compared to just 1 in 10 (11%) people aged 55+ ?.

according to a recent survey the largest percentages of respondents who drink alcohol in the UE are found in
Denmark (93%), Sweden (90%) and the Netherlands (88%) ?

And the lowest rates of alcohol consumers are found in Portugal (58%), Italy (60%) and Hungary (64%) ?.

according to a recent survey 76% of EU citizens have consumed alcoholic beverages in the past 12 months ?

24% claim to be abstained.

49% of consumers drink between 1 and 3 times a week and 69% of them usually have 1 or 2 drinks in each session and 10% have 5 drinks or more.

Alcohol consumption is the third largest risk factor for ill health in the European Union. It is responsible for 195,000 deaths each year and the economic cost to the EU is €125 billion per year.
