Cannabis Dependence

The Cannabis or “Marijuana” (also marihuana) is used in the form of cigarettes made from the dried plant, or its resin and flowers.

The effects of the drug are: exaltation, feeling of well-being, euphoric state and excitement. It also produces the decreases of motor abilities, the sensation that the time passes very slowly, exacerbation of schizophrenic symptoms, and difficulties in depth perception, which is very important during automobile driving.

The Cannabis Dependence produces psychic dependence, but there is no physical dependence, no tolerance is developed, and no abstinence syndrome when the drug is discontinued.

Metabolic products of marijuana are retained in the tissues for a lengthy time.

Tolerance

What is Tolerance  ?

In drugs abuse Tolerance is defined as the need to increase the dose progressively in order to produce the effect originally achieved by smaller amounts.

As Tolerance is a progressive increase in dosage, it may be several hundred fold greater than the first dose after a short period of time.

In addiction to drugs, alcohol and other substances is common to find tolerance and physical or psychological dependence. The elimination of such drugs or alcohol triggers a withdrawal syndrome. For example, we will find physical dependence, tolerance and withdrawal in heroin addiction.
