Electric Convulsive Treatment

Did you know that …..

in 1938 Cerletti and Bini in Italy introduce Electric Convulsive Treatment ?

It was based in the belief that schizophrenia and epilepsy do not occur together. Later studies questioned that.

Electric Convulsive Treatment o Electroshock is a small electric shock to induce an epilepsy seizure in the patient.
The frequency is variable, but usually given three times a week for a fortnight or a month.

In the past Electric Convulsive Treatment or Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) was used for different mental illnesses. Currently it is only prescribed for stubborn cases of depression or schizophrenia who are unresponsive to less invasive treatments. Nowadays electroshock is applied under anesthesia.
