Did you Know that…..

the first hospital for the care of mental patients in America was San Hipólito Hospital in Mexico ?

That hospital was founded by fray Bernardo Alvarez in 1560 .

Before the foundation of that hospital the insane, ill-fed and half naked, roaming the streets or were housed in prisons. Later, in 1586, brother Bernardo Alvarez founded the Hospital of Santa Cruz for the mentally ill located in Oaxtepec, State of Morelos, also in Mexico.
